Karen Evon

You have probably seen the name on our social media page.  You may even know about the Karen Evon Memorial Scholarship.  But we'd like you to get a better understanding for the person that Karen Evon was and how she impacted our community.

Karen Evon (August 23, 1943 – October 19, 2023) lived a life defined by compassion, innovation, and lasting impact. Beginning her journey as a child model featured in Butterick patterns, Seventeen magazine, and Coca-Cola ads, she later pursued her education at the University of West Virginia, earning a degree in Spanish and English.

Karen became a true pioneer in the field of lactation support in Northern California. Her advocacy began in 1966 with La Leche League and grew into decades of leadership, mentorship, and service across the country. She helped establish support groups, organized conferences, and was among the first to earn her International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential when the exam was first offered in 1986.

In the 1990s, Karen co-founded a professional lactation association chapter and created community events like “Breastfest” to bring families and advocates together. She later opened Maternal Expressions in Folsom, a groundbreaking space that combined retail, education, and hands-on lactation support for mothers.

For over 23 years, Karen served WIC families throughout the Sacramento region, offering guidance, encouragement, and her signature reminder: “Remember to enjoy your baby.” She was also a founding member of the Sacramento Breastfeeding Coalition and a mentor to countless women who went on to become leaders in maternal and child health.

Karen is remembered for her warmth, infectious laughter, and unwavering dedication to supporting mothers and nurturing families. Her legacy continues through the many lives she touched and the ongoing work inspired by her passion.
